The Life in Kao I Dang Camp Thai Land
The camp is about two mile square with Hundreds of Thousands of Cambodian civilian refugees, every day we only see people walk back and forth and full of red dry dust in the air, sound of the crowed and children cried with a lot of distress. I am a young man active person, understood situation that Khmer people needs help in this camp .I decided to volunteer worked without pay as money but they provide me more food supplies, I was serving as an Artist group of Journalism News Call SOKSABUY (in English mean Hello How are You), also make the Children book for the temporary schools in the camp. I worked for the Kao I Dang Khmer community writing E.D.C (Education Development center), it was sponsored by the Christian organization name the world Concern and Save the children under umbrella of UNHCR in this camp.
Because Kao I Dang camp in Thailand is too crowed (2 Km Squared) water supplies are not enough (2 buckets per family in summer weather of 90 degree) it is not enough for my family of six people, Normal bath is not allowed, in one person only use 2Lites of water to cold off per day, Lucky I worked in the E.D.C (Education Development center), so I can used water supply from my work place.
Temporary hospital (supply by UNHCH) all kind of diseases appears on many people. Patients was die, but a lot patients was care and save. The big Christian organization like world concern, save the children, and the world Red Cross enters into camp to help. Unfortunate the helping was limited by Thai government .Thai soldiers patrol the outside camp fens, if they see refugee try to open the fen to get out searching for more food, they shot them to kill. Food supply is very poor condition just to survive. I had seen The UNHCR bring the food and supplies into the camp, but they have to stop and pay the Thai soldier to get the food and supplies inside the camp as well. Whatever happens, these organizations teams did their best of duty to save many Cambodian life.
Because The Kao I Dang camp is too crowed the UNHCR and Red Cross had decided to slit people to another camp. My family was transit to the new camp call Kabchhoeung camp in Sorin Thailand. In that camp is better than Kao I Dang camp .The house is made from cements sheet rocks and in good quality condition, most of the Thai people in Sorin speak Cambodia very well, Cambodian calls Khmer Sorin. The Thai solder in Sorin allowed people to go out the camp one a week to the river nearby for swimming. At that time I wrote a lot of letters to a lot of countries ambassador around the world requested the permission to live in their country. I had decided to attend the Christian Sunday Bible study in that camp, because I love to read the book, I had read the bible book of John again and again and I prayed God Jesus to help me understand the meaning in bible verse. Yes God had answered my pray, also I got a job as an Artist and writer in the new camp. I had attended the Christian church over there every Sunday. In 1983 my family was accepted by Unite State of America to settle a new life .
Kao I Dang is the Refugee Camp in Thai Land that I will never forget it.
